JCB Honoured with OGCA Environmental Award
2 min.
More than a fire station, this project represents a bold reimagining of what essential public infrastructure can be: resilient, sustainable, and deeply connected to the community it serves. Built as a net-zero carbon facility, Peterborough Fire Station #2 stands as a model for municipal construction, where environmental responsibility and operational excellence go hand in hand.
Selected from an exceptionally competitive field of submissions, the project was recognized for its outstanding quality, innovation, and measurable environmental impact. Featuring a mass timber structure, geothermal heating and cooling, a full rooftop solar photovoltaic array, and materials salvaged from the site’s former arena, the station demonstrates how thoughtful design and construction can significantly reduce environmental footprint while enhancing human experience.
“We are honoured to receive this recognition from the OGCA,” said Mr. Alexandre-Stéphane Boucher, CEO of JCB Construction Canada. “This award is a testament to the passion, ingenuity, and collaboration of our entire Toronto team and partners. Peterborough Fire Station #2 reflects our belief that infrastructure can do more, as it can inspire, protect, and lead the transition toward a more sustainable future.”
Designed as a post-disaster facility and built to serve a growing community, the station integrates high-performance systems with human-centred design, supporting firefighter wellbeing and performance, optimizing emergency response, and contributing to long-term operational savings. The project also highlights the power of collaboration, bringing together municipal leaders, engineers, architects, and trades to achieve a shared vision of climate-forward infrastructure.
The Ontario General Contractors Association noted the remarkable caliber and volume of submissions for the 2026 awards, underscoring the significance of this achievement. JCB’s project distinguished itself not only through technical excellence, but through its ability to deliver lasting environmental, social, and economic value.
The award has been formally presented at the OGCA’s 15th Annual Construction Symposium as JCB extends its sincere thanks to the OGCA for this honour and proudly congratulates all fellow award recipients.
