JCB takes home a Mōnuma award

At the second edition of the Mōnuma Gala, the Sun Youth Community & Sports Centre project won the Construction, Public – Community category.

On September 30, 2026, architects, designers, contractors and industry professionals gathered at Théâtre St-James in Montreal to celebrate the second edition of the Mōnuma Awards. The evening aims to shine a light on the talents shaping the spaces around us and recognize excellence in projects completed across Québec.

Returning as host of the gala, comedian and host Félix-Antoine Tremblay guided guests throughout the evening, which recognized outstanding projects in architecture, design, construction and landscape architecture.

Building with a purpose

The new Sun Youth Community and Sports Centre was designed to directly support the organization’s mission and meet the needs of the thousands of people who benefit from its services each year.

In a dense urban environment and through a technically ambitious project, the teams relied on close collaboration and rigorous coordination to turn the architectural vision into a high-performing and sustainable facility.

Mass timber plays a central role in the project. The structure incorporates glued laminated timber, helping reduce the building’s carbon footprint while creating spaces that are both functional, bright and welcoming.

These structural elements are complemented by a range of environmental performance strategies, including geothermal energy and solar power generation, contributing to the building’s carbon-neutral design objectives.

Innovation driving performance

The complexity of the project also called for the use of digital tools and collaborative methods developed by the teams. BIM modelling, combined with close coordination between professionals, subcontractors and site teams, made it possible to anticipate technical challenges, optimize resources and maintain project momentum.

This approach helped the project stay ahead of schedule while maintaining a high standard of quality throughout construction.

Beyond its architectural and technological choices, the project demonstrates what construction can achieve when guided by a shared vision: creating a high-performing building that addresses real needs and makes a lasting contribution to its community.

This recognition at the Mōnuma Awards celebrates the collective efforts of all the teams and partners who helped bring the Sun Youth Community and Sports Centre to life, a place designed to serve the community today and for generations to come.

Congratulations to everyone who contributed to making this project a reality!
